Coloring books have been all the rage for the last few years! For all of us hand lettering enthusiasts, this is the perfect medium to create gorgeous products that can be used creatively by customers. But, what’s the easiest way to turn your own hand lettering into a coloring book worthy page, without it looking sloppy or too “stiff”?

This was a problem I encountered over and over again when trying to create calligraphy coloring book pages with my lettering. Drawing the outlines resulted in lettering that just didn’t look like my writing, or wasn’t fluid enough.

When I was finally introduced to the iPad Pro and the Procreate App, it was a game changer! The ability to create brushes meant that I was able to develop a lettering brush that would create the outlines automatically for me. So below, I’m going to show you my step by step process for creating a hand lettered coloring book page.

Supplies Needed

  1. iPad Pro (this will not work on a regular iPad), the Apple Pencil, and Procreate App
  2. The Printable Wisdom Outline Brush
  3. Another solid lettering brush (I use the PW Original Flat Brush in the video below)

Psst! Don’t have an iPad Pro? I have something for you too! Scroll to the bottom of the post and snag the free coloring page download I made for you.

Skills Needed

  1. Basic lettering skills – Download my Beginner Calligraphy Guide here.
  2. Basic Procreate app skills

Steps

  1. With the Outline Brush, write your text just as you usually would create your lettering.
  2. Go back, and with the Eraser tool, erase all overlapping portions of your letters.
  3. With another solid lettering brush (like the PW Original or Original Flat brush), close the gaps at the corners of your lettering.
  4. Add embellishments as desired. On the example shown below, I drew some simple leaves and five-petal flowers that would be easy to color in.

Below is a video (in real time!) of the creation of a lettering page using the steps above.
